2-Day Itinerary
Day 1Your 2-Day Mabamba Swamp and Ngamba Island Safari begins with pickup from your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe. An early start is recommended, particularly for travelers interested in bird photography and Shoebill sightings.
You will travel towards Mabamba Swamp before beginning the canoe excursion into the wetland. Mabamba is a wetland on the northern shore of Lake Victoria and is well known for its Shoebill population. The best way to explore the wetland is by a guided boat trip through its narrow channels. Local guides navigate through the papyrus and shallow waters while searching for Shoebills and other wetland species.
The Shoebill is the main attraction, but you may also encounter other birds during the excursion. Depending on the season and conditions, possible sightings include Shoebill, African fish eagle, kingfishers, herons, egrets, jacanas, weavers and other wetland species. A Shoebill sighting cannot be guaranteed because the birds move through the wetland naturally.
After the canoe excursion, return to the mainland and enjoy lunch. You will then transfer to your hotel in Entebbe. The afternoon can be spent relaxing around Lake Victoria or at your hotel. If time permits, an optional Entebbe activity can be added.

Day 2After breakfast, you will transfer to the boat departure point in Entebbe. Board the boat for the journey across Lake Victoria to Ngamba Island. The sanctuary's published information states that boats operate from Entebbe locations including Waterfront Club and Uganda Wildlife Education Centre, with different boat options available.
Upon arrival, you will receive an introduction to the sanctuary and its chimpanzee residents before proceeding to the visitor viewing area. The main experience is observing the chimpanzees during their feeding session. Ngamba Island's visitor program offers both morning and afternoon experiences, with a morning session from approximately 9:00 AM to 12:45 PM and an afternoon session from approximately 12:45 PM to 5:00 PM.
During the experience, you may watch the chimpanzees feeding, climbing, playing, vocalizing and interacting with one another. Your guide or sanctuary staff will explain the chimpanzees' stories and the conservation work involved in caring for rescued animals. You will also have time to enjoy the island environment, photograph the scenery and observe some of the birdlife around the sanctuary.
After the experience, board the boat back to Entebbe. From Entebbe, you can be transferred to your hotel in Entebbe or continue to Kampala.
