Your 4-Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Safari begins in Kigali. Your Berengei Africa Safaris guide will meet you at Kigali International Airport or your hotel and brief you about the safari.

If you arrive early enough, begin your Rwanda experience with a private Kigali city tour. Depending on your interests and available time, you can visit local markets, Nyandungu Eco-Park, Kigali's craft centers or other city attractions. Kigali is known for its clean streets, rolling hills and organized neighborhoods, making the first day a relaxed introduction to Rwanda.

After the city tour, continue with the drive toward Musanze and Volcanoes National Park. The road north provides beautiful views of Rwanda's countryside, with green hills, farms and small communities along the way. Arrive at your lodge and relax.

Day 2

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Today is the main highlight of your Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Safari. Wake up early and enjoy breakfast before driving to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters at Kinigi. After registration and briefing, you will meet the ranger guides and receive information about the gorilla trek.

The exact trekking route depends on the location of your assigned gorilla family. You will then begin walking through the forested slopes of the Virunga Mountains. The terrain can be steep, muddy and slippery, so proper hiking shoes and suitable clothing are important.

Once you locate your gorilla family, you will have the opportunity to observe the gorillas as they feed, rest, move through the forest and interact with one another. You may encounter a dominant silverback, adult females, juveniles and younger gorillas. The duration of the trek varies according to the location and movement of the gorilla family.

After your gorilla experience, return to the park headquarters and meet your guide. Continue back to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. The remainder of the afternoon is free — you can relax at the lodge or choose an optional cultural experience around Musanze.

Day 3

Volcanoes National Park & Optional Activities

After the excitement of gorilla trekking, Day 3 gives you time to enjoy the Volcanoes region at a more relaxed pace. Have breakfast at your lodge before choosing an optional activity.

Travelers who want another primate experience can arrange golden monkey tracking in Volcanoes National Park. Golden monkeys are endemic to the Albertine Rift region and are known for their distinctive golden-orange coats and active behavior.

Alternatively, you can choose a cultural experience or simply enjoy the scenery around Musanze. You can also keep the day free to rest after your gorilla trek. After your chosen activity, return to your lodge.

The gorilla permit is one of the biggest components of the cost of a Rwanda gorilla safari. Permit availability should therefore be checked before confirming the final itinerary. Rwanda's official tourism platform directs travelers to its booking system for gorilla and other primate tracking permits and provides the current applicable price information through that platform.

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda can be arranged throughout the year. Travelers who prefer generally drier trekking conditions may choose the country's drier periods, although weather in the Virunga Mountains can change quickly. The rainforest can receive rain even during traditionally drier months.

A pair of good hiking boots is particularly important because gorilla trekking trails can be muddy, steep and slippery.

Gorilla trekking requires walking through a mountainous forest environment. The difficulty varies considerably because gorilla families move around the forest and may be located close to or far from the trailhead. Travelers should therefore prepare for several hours of walking.
