Trek the mystic Rwenzori Mountains. High glaciers, the Valley of Nine Lakes, bearded lichen on giant heathers, rocky cliffs and snow-capped peaks — Africa's third highest summit awaits.

Trekking the mystic Rwenzori Mountains National Park in Uganda is a truly fantastic and unique experience. The wonder of the high glaciers, the beauty of the Valley of Nine Lakes, the bearded lichen hanging from giant heathers against a backdrop of rocky cliffs, crags, and snow-capped peaks create one of Africa's most spectacular mountain adventures. The wide variety of flora and fauna, with several biospheres as you ascend through different vegetation zones, creates the ultimate trekking experience.
We provide all technical climbing equipment necessary for the climb including:
Climbing to Margherita Peak is now considered technical due to climate change and rapidly changing glacier conditions. Knowledge of ropes, crampons, ascenders, belaying with figure 8s, and basic ice axe handling is highly recommended. The mountain contains steep ice sections reaching over 60% gradient. All guides are professionally trained in ice climbing and rescue techniques and can assist climbers with limited experience — however trekkers should be prepared to learn basic mountaineering skills during the ascent.
Day 1The trek begins at Trekkers Hostel at 1,450 metres before ascending through the lush Afro-Montane Forest Zone toward Sine Camp at 2,596 metres. Fit trekkers may continue further to Kalalama Camp at 3,134 metres.
The trail passes through tall tropical forest trees rich with birdlife and primates including blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys. Lucky trekkers may hear chimpanzees echoing through the forest or encounter the rare L'Hoest monkey. Vegetation varies from giant forest trees and bamboo thickets to moss-covered vines, flowers, fungi, and hanging lichens creating an enchanting rainforest atmosphere. Nearby, Enock's Falls offers one of the most beautiful waterfall scenes in the mountains.
Day 2After breakfast, the trail enters the Bamboo-Mimulopsis Zone with steep climbs and giant stair sections. During wet conditions, the trail can become muddy and slippery, adding to the adventure. The route climbs steadily through valleys filled with giant heather trees draped in old-man's beard lichen. Numerous moss-covered waterfalls and streams line the trail.
In the afternoon, trekkers may hike to Mutinda Lookout at 3,925 metres for spectacular views over the Rwenzori Mountains, Kasese town, and Lake George. This acclimatization hike is highly recommended for climbers preparing for Margherita Peak.
Day 3Today's trail becomes increasingly alpine and boggy, especially during rainy periods. Trekkers cross the Mutinda Valley through tussock grasslands dotted with everlasting flowers and giant lobelias. The climb toward Namusangi Valley offers incredible views of Mutinda Peaks, waterfalls, and sweeping alpine scenery. The valley widens as the trail gradually ascends toward Bugata Camp.
Day 4The trail climbs toward Bamwanjarra Pass at 4,450 metres where clear weather reveals outstanding views of the major Rwenzori peaks. Descending from the pass, the route traverses valleys filled with giant groundsels, lobelias, mosses, and alpine vegetation.
This area is also one of the best places to observe the rare Malachite Sunbird. Hunwick's Camp offers incredible views of Mount Stanley, Mount Baker, Weismann's Peak, and McConnell's Prong.
Day 5The trail descends across the valley floor toward the stunning Lake Kitandara surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery and alpine vegetation. From here, trekkers ascend Scott Elliott's Pass before climbing the ridge leading to Margherita Camp at 4,485 metres.
This historic camp was used by the Duke of Abruzzi during his famous 1906 expedition to Margherita Peak.
Day 6 · SummitWake up at approximately 2:00am for an early breakfast before beginning the summit ascent by 2:30am. Due to rapidly changing mountain weather conditions, summit attempts start very early to avoid afternoon snowstorms and heavy cloud cover moving in from the Congo rainforests.
The climb involves glacier crossings, steep ice sections, exposed rock scrambling, and technical mountaineering sections assisted by experienced guides. Upon reaching the summit at 5,109 metres, climbers are rewarded with unforgettable views across the Rwenzori ranges and into Congo. After the summit, descend back to Margherita Camp before continuing down to Hunwick's Camp.
Day 7The day begins with a climb toward Oliver's Pass at 4,505 metres offering some of the best panoramic views of Mount Stanley, Mount Speke, and Mount Baker. Trekkers may optionally summit Weismann's Peak at an extra cost.
The trail then descends through glacier-shaped valleys and alpine ridges toward Kiharo Camp, located deep within a beautiful valley surrounded by cliffs and dense vegetation.
Day 8The final descent through the Nyamwamba Valley is one of the most beautiful sections of the entire trek. Trekkers pass cascading waterfalls, moss-covered rocks, deep valleys, rivers, dense forests, and stunning tropical scenery.
Wildlife sightings may include duikers, hyrax, monkeys, and numerous bird species. This valley remained unexplored for many years due to its rugged terrain and offers a spectacular finale to the Rwenzori experience.
