Meru National Park

KENYA SAFARIS

Meru National Park is in Eastern Kenya, covering 870 square kilometers. This park, once in poor condition, was transformed into a popular tourist destination between 2000 and 2005 with help from the Agence Française de Development (AFD) and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), who helped combat poaching.

Meru National Park is full of wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, black and white rhinos, zebras, hippos, kudu, gazelle, and hyenas. It’s crossed by 13 rivers, including the Tana and Ura, which are filled with hippos. The park is also a bird lover’s paradise with over 427 species, like vultures, owls, sunbirds, and ostriches. Reptiles like pythons, puff adders, and cobras are also found here.

The park is famous as the place where conservationists George and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the Lioness, a story told in the book and movie Born Free. Elsa is buried here, along with part of Joy's ashes.

Visitors can enjoy the beautiful scenery, see Mount Kenya, explore George and Joy Adamson's former home, visit Adamson’s Falls, and relax by the Tana River.
