Lake Mburo National Park renown for being the smallest park and the closest to Kampala with approximately 240 kilometers distance and 30 km from Mbarara and 290km from Entebbe International Airport.

The park located in the western part of Uganda is bordered by four districts including Kiruhura, Lyantonde, Mbarara and Kiruhura making it a perfect location for cultural experience.

Lake Mburo has been in existence since 1933, it started as a controlled hunting area and later upgraded to a game reserve in 1936 and in 1983 it was awarded a national park status by the former president of Uganda, Sir Milton Obote with a major intention of punishing the Banyakole for allegedly supporting the anti –government rebels, the Banyakole used the reserve as a grazing ground for their cattle so Obote ordered for their exit and they ended up as squatters around the park.

Lake Mburo national park is blessed with lots of green scenery and wildlife including the klipspringers visible on the metamorphic rocks that are believed to have existed for more than 500 million years.

The park also has five lakes with other natural occupants including the zebras and it is believed that it has the biggest population of them at about 5000, Impalas, elands, buffaloes, oribi, Waterbucks, Leopards with the highest concentration of them in Uganda, hippo, hyena and reedbucks among others and plenty of bird species like the bare faced go away bird, Ruppell’s starling, black bellied, mosque swallow and more different species which have made Lake Mburo one of the best birding tourist destinations.

Lake Mburo has a very rich eco system of flora and fauna that can be accessed through the different trails designed by Uganda Wildlife Authority like Rwonyo trail leading to the salt lick, Rubanga forest trail, along the shores of the lake.

The walk is best done in the dawn hours of the day lasting for over 2 hours based on your preference and it is the best way for tourists to come to a full encounter with nature in the wild savanna plains as compared to the drive. Possible sightings on the walk include the zebras, Impalas, elands, buffaloes, oribi, Waterbucks, Leopard, hippo, hyena and reedbucks among others.

Boat Cruise

The boat cruise in Lake Mburo National park is done on the five lakes found in the park. The trips can be done in morning and afternoon either as scheduled or exclusive basing on your choice.

The boat cruise lasts for over 2 hours with great sightings of wildlife resting along the shores of the lakes like African buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles, and monitor lizards, numerous bird species like the flamingos, African skimmer, kingfishers, and fish eagles among others plus bird species like the kinds of the kingfishers and also a home to the only African fin foot.

The nature walk in Kibale national park is both a day and night activity that goes through the demarcated trails of the forest bringing you to a closer encounter with the different wildlife that have found a home in the forest canopy like 13 primate species including chimpanzees, vervet, red-tailed, L'Hoest's, blue monkeys, grey-cheeked manabey, red colobus, black and white colobus, olive baboon, and over 335 bird species like the ducky crimson wing, black capped Apalis, blue headed sunbird, red faced woodland warber and purple breasted sunbird among others and over 60 other kinds of mammals besides the primates like the bush pigs, elephants, duikers among others. The activity is done in an accompaniment of the guide ranger and you could need the spot light for cases of a nocturnal walk.

Birding

Lake Mburo National Park accommodates over 350 bird species that makes it one of the best birding places in Uganda. The birding adventure in Lake Mburo National park is very satisfying whether on foot, safari vehicle or in a boat. The birds can also be spotted in the swamp valleys of Miriti and also along Rwonyo trail, Rubanga forest trail and at the shores of the lake.

Common sightings include; the papyrus gonolek, Red faced Barbet, Abyssinian ground hornbill, Verreaux’s eagle plus the rare African fin-foot that can only be found in Lake Mburo National park.

Spot Fishing

Sport fishing is one of the best ways of spending your adventurous day in Lake Mburo National Park. It is carried out on the five lakes in the park in accompaniment of the fishing guides who know the best fishing spots with a ranger guide on board for your safety.

The common fish species in the Lakes include the Nile perch, the tiger fish, catfish, Tilapia finally yet importantly. We organize all kinds of fishing trips that include: multiple day trips, full- day trips, morning or afternoon trips on a catch and release policy.
